Stats > Second Leg at UM Steadily Drew More Attention

Hoorey, we're so pleased that the second leg of MUDS held at UM was conceivably more "happening"... There were more participants and also more supports... We could see parents and family members cheering, participating best friends sightseeing in Taman Rimba as well as a few participating "couples" enjoying the lovely atmosphere across the "Bukit Cinta"... By several means, thanks also to the previous leg held at UKM, which stimulates the interest of more passionate du-ers and enthusiastic supporters in UM... Hopefully this will continue to rise ahead of the finale...

Here's the encouraging fraction of participants according to the category:

Men's University - 60

Women's University - 14

Men's Open - 115

Women's Open - 32

Men's Relay - 15 teams

Mixed Relay - 15 teams

Media - 8

TOTAL Individuals = 229

TOTAL Teams = 30

TOTAL PARTICIPANTS = 319

You see the statistics and let's call for more participants especially the women and university students...

Give your supports and feel the excitement...

What you look like after completing a duathlon

Here's what you look like after completing a duathlon.

Okay, not everyone looks this happy but he was one of the top five for the men's open - good reason for the smile on his face.

The mark of the cyclist - caution tan lines ahead

You can tell the serious cyclist at a glance.

Check for the tan lines - like these or on the upper arm.

Despite the free flow of sunblock during the warm up, the UV rays are pretty strong.

The Duathlon, It is not without its dangers

MUDS 2008 is a heck load of fun but there are dangers as this is a competitive sport.

Here is an example of what can happen in the adrenaline rush.

Thanks to the racer who allowed her injuries to be photographed.

The pix taken in the forest/Rimba Ilmu are pretty cool - if you're one of those captured leave a messaage in or if you know the racer who was photographed invite them to take a look.

MUDS 08 2nd Leg - part 3

I've tried to photograph everyone and anyone but there has been a wee bit more emphasis on the leaders.

Check the photostream once it is up to see your happy smiling faces; and also the grimaces of pain, and the occasional showboating.

Start of MUDS 08 2nd Leg - Part 2

Still more of you
There were moments when I feared the stampede but you were quite polite and considerate - thanks
And still in endless droves
It's not how you start, but how you finish

Start of MUDS 08 2nd Leg part 1

At the start line
And they're off
And more of them
Jostling for position
So many of you on Saturday!

MUDS 08 - My Favorite Picture

First view

The pounding those poor footsies are taking!

All is revealed, well almost

MUDS 08 second leg was more exciting if that is possible than the first leg. More racers, more supporters, tougher course, more nailbiting results. And a very fast time by the winners too.

Pakui will be updating on the top five finishers of each category tomorrow - with pix. In the meantime full results are available at www.duathlonseries.com.my. And Sam and Muddy will be uploading lots of pix.

Here is my favorite - the Kaki Ayam series. I was so impressed by this racer and seriously concerned about how his poor feet would feel after the race.

A shout out to this racer for his determination! That's the Malakoff University Duathlon Series spirit.

Participants are also reminded to be within the start line area about an hour before the race start because we're afraid some could miss or mishear the short race briefing around that time...

OK hereby, the second leg of MUDS 08 at Pusat Sukan UM on SATURDAY, JULY 26, 2008, will START AT 9.00am, SHARP!!!

MUDS UKM that was...

I was supposed to compete that day but because my lovely colleagues loved me too much, I was adviced not to join the race to save myself for PD triathlon the next day.

Oh well, there's 2 more duathlons coming up, right? Hopefully I am able to join either one.

OK back to saturday's story..

From left: Malakoff Corp. Berhad's MD/CEO, En Ahmad Jauhari , LeTua's coach, En. Rahim, Endie, Hamid and Azli

As usual music were blaring from the speakers to give the 'party' atmosphere. Every race still gives the participants the nerves no matter how long they have been in the game. Having some distractions and friendly chats and banters with the others do help keep the anxiety under wraps.

National duathlete, Mariana and Stephanie Chok with yours truly

The morning was cloudy and we were expecting rain or at least a drizzle to happen in the race. I don't know which is worse, to race in the rain or the blazing sun. Cloudy is good, but please no rain. Steph was joking with Mariana, "We'd better finish this race before it rains.. hehe.." You are pro, girl, of course you can finish it fast. Well, it's definitely better than racing in the scorching sun.

If racing in the rain, just open your mouth for water.. don't need to stop at the water stations maa.. hehe

Starting line frenzy

The racers gathered at the Start line a few minutes before 9 a.m. Adele blew the horn at the start of the event. Many ran as fast as they could while some held back and paced themselves wisely. This is a multipart sports. Think endurance, not short-term glory, i.e. finishing the first run fastest, then suffering on the bike and puking on the second run.

Things seemed to run smoothly and the racers looked like pro, although some might be first-timers and as usual, kekalutan memang tidak dapat dielakkan, i.e. forgetting to take off running cap before putting on the helmet.. Hmm, it wasn't even sunny, why do you need a cap on? Well, maybe it was out of habit, it's OK, no worries.

Cycling and second run were done in the rain for some racers. It's part and parcel of racing. Organizers can help to manage the transition areas, water stations, food, but weather was beyond anyone's control.

At least they had a cool climate to race in ;)

Some finished faster than others :)

Most of Malakoff Cycling Club members did well. One puked 3 times and had to DNF(did not finish). He was not used to running and probably thought running 3km was do-able without training.

Youngest participant, 12-year-old Darimi with his parents, Mejar Kalam and Nurina

Congratulations to all Finishers! I know all of you had a great time and were glad you didn't sleep in on a saturday morning :)

Next race - MUDS @ UM this saturday.

Are you ready yet?

"The Start"

Participants getting ready at the starting line.

No-stress race.... plenty of time and room for chat :-)

Hey bro, watch your steps while smiling at the camera....

Run

Fueled by Powerbar....

Yes, MUDS 08 at UKM has been a success!

8.55am: All the du-ers on the mark and getting set

9.00am: Off they go

Participants started to bike at transition area

PowerBar surely supports the race

Healthy competition: MUDS 08 at UKM finishes on a high

Contestants joyfully and resolutely ride out the damped and cold morning race

Fantastic three: Mejar Kalam, his wife and their 13-year-old birthday boy come all the way through to significantly complete the race

Successful finishers are well pleased with respective certificates

Thanks to their chipping in: Potential best duathletes from UiTM showed some impactful appearance as well

The ex-UiTM fellows add zing to MUDS 08 at UKM. Thanks a lot.

Watch out, UTM's duathlon princess may show a more forceful performance in MUDS 08 upcoming legs.

A well-deserved round of applause to UPNM clan who've showed up a great force at UKM. Keep it up! Yet, "our blogging team" challenge the rest to try to surpass their great showings. Go everybody!

And the key credit goes to MALAKOFF!!!

Tons of gratitude to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

A million thanks to PowerBar.

Great appreciations to Quick Release Adventures.

Also significant admirations to everyone who makes MUDS 08 a great event, essentially, all participants and media. See everyone in following legs.

Izwan Md Sumairi from TV3, effectively put his name at top in the "scoreboard" of the Media Category

Utusan Malaysia is also proud with their two members spot themselves among the top three finishers in the Media Category. Well done!

Bringing The Standard Up: MUDS 08 Open's Category Winners at UKM Eyed To Be The Best Among The Rising Du-ers

Jusery Gani, strongly but calmly came forward as the Men's Open category winner in the First Leg of MUDS 08 at UKM

Mariana Mohammad once again prevailed as one of the country's top duathletes when she comfortably ruled the Women's Open category.

The Victorious Teams of MUDS 08 First Leg at UKM: The exhilaration is heating up

P2K PowerBar team, is set to repeat their tremendous showing after conquering no. 1 spot in the Men's Relay category

UPNM 's Mejar Kalam Apprentice 6 team, also proudly came first in the Mixed Team category

Wonderful consolation for the new team from UTM as they marked their emergence by finishing second in the Mixed Team category. Well earned and way to go!

Stats - Duathlon More Popular Than You Think

First of the duathlon is more popular than you think. The first leg didn't see the highest possible participation because the PD triathlon was on the next day, and the more hardcore types had headed down to PD to train in advance. We're expecting more of you to turn up at UM this Saturday.

Here's the tale of the tape:

Men's university – 62

Women's university – 10

Men's Open – 91

Women's Open – 12

Men's Relay – 8 teams

Mixed Relay – 10 - teams

Media – 8

TOTAL Individuals = 183

TOTAL Teams = 18

TOTAL participants = 237

But where were the women? The ladies who turned up did great but where were the rest of you?

And the sign-up for the team relay - its much easier and a lot more fun than it appears.

Results - Men's University

Ooooo...the drama; the ecstasy of victory and the agony of defeat; and the pull-out-the-hair-by-the-roots moment of realising that you've taken the wrong way to the transition area. As Chan Juan Shen of UPNM and Ong Wei Xiang of UTM found out - they earned a 4 minute penalty and still managed to place in the top five.

See what you're missing by not being at the finish line? Put this in your scheduler for July 26 now - University Malaya - 8am to 10.15am - MUDS 2008. Must be there.

This does not in any way detract from Mohd Suhaimie Tolek's win - he was that fast!

5 A016* Chan Juan Shen ‐ UPNM Malaysia 0:49:41
4 A056* Ong Wei Xiang ‐ UTM Malaysia 0:49:35
3 A045 Mohd Syahidan Alias ‐ UiTM Malaysia 0:48:44

Results - Men's Open

Race to the finish - Jusery and Krishna battle it out - only 3 seconds separate the two

2 C337 Krishna Kumar Jayaram 0:47:05
1 C331 Jusery Gani 0:47:02

The timing for the top two was very close - and darn exciting to watch. Even if you don't participate get on down to UM on July 26 to check the sporting drama at the finish line and throughout the race. It's way more exciting than sleeping late.

Some Important Tips from the Briefing

The clinic began with introduction by Stephanie Chok and Sharom Abdullah, sharing of their achievements and most memorable events, both are most notable duathletes in Malaysia, as perhaps in this region.

Stephanie Chok emphasized that never skip breakfast and at the same time not to opt for different type of breakfast. Also, to avoid spicy and heavy meal such as Nasi Lemak and Fried Rice.

The stretching exercise does not have any particular starting points, can be started at any body parts.

Drink before thirty, and come early before the race, so that could prepare the race physically and mentally. She gave pretty good advice to beginner on remain "cool" while a the starting point, like not to stay in front, letting the "experienced" runners to run a ahead first.

More updates later.

The Day is Tomorrow

The first leg of Malakoff University Duathlon Series 2008 will kick start tomorrow at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi.

MUDS 08 Update > UKM route distance has been revised

Hey du-ers,

Kindly be noted that there's a slight adjustment made to the first leg route in UKM. The new distance of the UKM route now is 3km run – 13km bike – 3km run.

Also accordingly, clearly be informed that the revised UKM maps (run & bike) have been reflected on MUDS 08 official website, http://www.duathlonseries.com.my/raceinfo.html.

Happy preparing and have a superb day ahead!

Training with newbies

When I first joined this sport I had the honour of learning from the best people in the field, mostly colleagues from Malakoff who had done duathlons before. They are always there to answer my questions regarding training and nutrition and of course the race day jitters.

When they first learned that I bought a bike, they were kind to organize a group training ride for a newbie like me.

Today I had the pleasure to continue this tradition by taking out some cycling newbies who contacted me via this blog.

The idea was to do a 30km ride around Putrajaya, followed by a half hour run. No set distance, just run to familiarize the legs. In attendance was Ibrahim(an avid cyclist), Kash(a design director in an advertising company), Siti(just transferred to work in KL from Penang), her friend, Ironman Saiful and Mat Nor, a triathlete.

We started from Taman Warisan Pertanian Putrajaya and made our way to PICC. I told Ibrahim to use a route with less hills as this was supposed to be the first long ride for the newbies. Didn't want to scare them off by taking them to Shangri-la Hill just yet.

So we took the road to Dengkil toll from Putrajaya. Unfortunately Siti's friend crashed with Mat Nor on our way to the toll. They were both trying to distant themselves from a lorry coming from the right when suddenly a car came from the left pressed his horn and startled them, causing them to crash each other. Both suffered minor bruises and lucky nothing bad happened to either bikes.

I know this sounds rude but to most cyclists, the first thing that we will asked if we were involved in a crash is "How's the bike? Is the bike OK?" Yes, we are more concerned about our bikes than ourselves. If the bike is damaged, then how would we ride back to the car? We don't want to burden the others to accompany us back and hamper their training plans.

Saiful accompanied Mat Nor back to the parking lot while I accompanied Siti's friend and acted as a sweeper for the group. I know how hard it is to ride after a crash because I had crashed on the bike 2 times before. The whole body must be aching and with road rashes on his knees and hands still bleeding, it must be difficult for him to concentrate on pedaling.

After making a u-turn at the toll, we headed back to Putrajaya. I was surprised that the newbies managed to climb the long incline just after the toll en route to Putrajaya. We then followed the road to the boulevard in front of PICC back to Taman Warisan.

After safely securing our bikes in the car, Kash, Siti and myself changed to our running shoes for the half hour brick run. Siti noted that she could barely feel her legs running after the 30km ride. My legs were kind of draggy and making one step at a time was an effort. I must practice this more so that I won't suffer on race day. Kash however led the way the whole time. Yeah, I'd expected that from a Sundown marathoner :)

All in all, it was a good initial 30km ride for the newbies and a good brick after that for me and the girls.

Let's do it again next week, shall we?

UKM MUDS is 14 days away(and so does my PD triathlon.. now I'm scared!)

How does a duathlon feels like?

Race report of my first duathlon race in Powerman Malaysia, November 2007(written in november 07).

**************************************************************************

This being my first race made me nervous since 2 months ago. I don't have high expectations on this race and I only aim to finish it it good condition.

Before the race, met some frens and mingled around to calm my nerves. Took a few pics and monkeyed around some more. I think this was where I got it wrong - I should have stood quietly for a while to strategize, size up my competition and focus for the race. Well, it didn't help also if you have frens like mine who like to psycho each other before the race starts! Aku budget taknak panik.. hampir-hampir nak tekan panic button jugak la dengar diorang sembang hahaha!

my bib

1st Run

The pistol was fired and we're off! Paced with Harry during 1st run. My legs were heavy, sort of like "Why do I have to run today??" Harry was breathing heavily, I thought he was going to pass out at one point or another. Probably not quit warmed up yet, I thought.

I asked him, "Do u want to rest a little at the drink station?"

He said, "Rest like how?"

I said, "Like stand at the station for half minute, and then go at it again.."

He said, "Can we take the drink and walk?"

So we took some cups and walked while drinking. Then he pointed at the makcik nasi lemak stall a few feet in front, "I think THAT's where we should stop!" Hahaha.. sempat buat lawak lagi sambil semput-semput ni..

Saw a few bystanders along the route and I clapped my hand, yelling at them, "Tepuklah!" They clapped and smiled at us. I was aiming to finish this race in one piece.. and I better learn to take it easy, not treating it too seriously. I was not targeting a podium finish BTW :P

We managed to keep at slow pace and finished the 1st run at 35-ish minutes. OK lah.. aku pun memang budget 40 minutes for first run pun.

CEO of Malakoff, En Ahmad Jauhari entering transition(he did the full distance on 10km run-60km bike-10km run)

Salman from the Fernleaf ad arrived at T1(first transition) earlier than me.. so malu one...

Bike

I was dilly-dallying in the transition and almost forgot to change shoes! I told Harry to proceed with the bike while I changed my shoes. One thing that I forgot to visualized was a fast transition! After downing one Powergel with water, grabbed some bananas and I was off. The route was mainly flat except for 3 bridges that acted as 'hills' on the bike leg.

First bridge was OK. One guy said hi to me on the bridge and asked how long have I raced. Well, FYI, this is my first duathlon, I told him. Hmm, do I pose like a seasoned racer? Maybe the jersey made me looked seasoned and 'weapon' but in actual fact, I'm just a mother-of-three who was trying to survive the day!

Second bridge was milder than the first bridge. But the third one.. you gotta see it to believe it. 400m of sharp climb. I wanted to stand climb but since I could climb smoothly while sitting, I just maintained my cadence to the top.

But starting from the downhill, all went 'downhill' to for me. Started to feel cramps creeping in my left calf. "SPIN!" I told myself. If I stopped, I will definitely be finished. Saw Mac and Harry who were on their way back. Alamak! Bungkus lah camni.. diorang memang kayuh laju.

Shahrom Abdullah finishing his 60km ride to enter T2(second transition) for the second run

Tried to flex my legs and I could feel the muscles pulling if I moved my legs in a certain way. Man, I've never cramped before during cycling and it hurts like mad! Well, no use crying now. Just maintained spinning and cadence, u-turned, grabbed a bottle of water from the drink station and poured it on my back. God that felt great!

One km after the u-turn was the dreaded hill again, done in reverse. Jangan nak jadi hero - maintain cadence ONLY.

Yeah, I survived the damned bike route. Upon entering transition, the cramps started to creep in again! Change of game plan - I must not walk! Run all the way!

Packed my bike, downed one ORS packet and Powergel and I was off again.

At last I've finished my 30km ride!

2nd Run

Since the onset of cramps, I have decided that I was not going to walk at all through the 2nd run. First km, I ran super slow that if I was a bystander looking at me running, I would have thrown bananas at myself! Most people on the road were walking while I was running as if my life depended on it. No one overtook me except for the elite racers. Sorry la geng, I also wanted to walk but I have to shake off the cramps lah, so I had to keep on running although very slowly.

At the 1st drink station, I drank one cup, poured one cup into the front of my jersey and another cup poured on my back. Must not overheat!

Saw Rahimi from Powerbar in front of me. He was doing sprint too and he was walking at that point. Not far in front of him was a girl from my category. She walked and sometimes looked over her shoulder. Whenever she looked behind, she started to run a bit and then walked some more. I didn't noticed what she's up to until it was too late - she was actually marking me! Hahaha! Making sure that I did not come too near to her! Relax girl! I was running my own race and trying to survive here.. no intention of making vegetable soup out of anyone!

After the 2nd drink station, I knew I had 1km to go but I was saving some energy to sprint in the stadium.

As for the girl in purple(709, I think), I didn't managed to catch up with her but I managed to sprint the last 100m to finish line in one piece! Yay!

100m to finish line.. at last!

In the result displayed after the race, I came up on 20th place with 2:42:23. HAHAHA! Lawak OK!

Alhamdulillah I finished the race...

This morning, my sister said to me, "After watching the duathlon yesterday and seeing that running is not so hard after all, I think I'll take up running.."

Wise choice, sis, and good for you!

What is Brick?

**taken from http://beginnertriathlete.com

What's a "brick" and why is it named so?

* Bike-Run-ICK!
* That's how your legs feel for the first part of the run.
* Named by Mark Sisson and Scott Zagarino one day in 1988 after they completed a
Bike-Run workout -- "Just another brick in the wall".

For us beginners, a brick is usually a bike/run combo. This simulates the bike to run transition - many think is the toughest part of the race. It should be done during your final training phase leading up to a race. A brick simulates the bike-to-run transition. It's wiggy. Have you ever had your leg go to sleep on you? You can move it OK but you don't feel like it's part of you. Really. It's like running on rubber pegs or running with a ball and chain attached to them.

Bricks are usually demanding on your body - don't make them routine. Definitely plan on doing 2-3 bricks during your final lead-up to your triathlon. When doing these bricks, you don't have to run your best time - go easy. I wouldn't even do your full miles. What might also work during your last several weeks to a month is to maybe do an easy mile of running after every bike ride.

Also, at the end of the bike leg, lower your gear and increase your pedal revolutions to loosen muscles tightened by pushing big gears.

If time is not a bother to you, it will definitely NOT hurt to take a few minutes to stretch those leg muscles.

But finally, the truth is that the 'bricks' I have been talking about are... well... whimpy. If your a serious triathlete, a true brick is to do several bike/run combos. Ughhhh!!!! Good thing we don't have to worry about that for now.
